Final DL of 2006

"The great problem is bringing life
back into the wasteland,
where people live inauthentically."

- Joseph Campbell

Tonight, Ananda and i are going on a moonlight cross country ski with some fellow yogis. Merging into my most treasured sound of ski across snow, we'll each reflect on the past year before returning to our tiny town hunkered at the foot of the Sacred Peak to watch a "Giant Pinecone" drop from the historic Weatherford Hotel at the stroke of midnight into a small droplet of humanity gathered to watch, to wonder, and to welcome a new year coming. A far, welcome cry from when i once got beaten and knifed in NYC after watching the Apple Drop in Times Square. Oh, life!

What a Year of DL's it has been!

Can you even begin to recollect all the Dharma Transmissions that we have shared?

And can we even begin to measure how each one of those DL's has now assumed appropriate vibrational residence within our cells, preparing us for our Journey Higher? Where else can the near daily dosage - each one unique and original - of such body/mind/spirit effort be found?

Nowhere 'cept right Here Now, oh cherished Sisters and Brothers!

Oh sure, 2006 carried with her the usual flotsam; new students throwing temper tantrums and even seasoned, once devoted students name calling and doing litigious things, et. al. Such is the predictable low chi tactics from those who cannot yet grock the Live Wire of this contemporary DharmaPath gifted from the Ancients. In the last few weeks of 2006, Shiva was dancing upon my Temple as if on Ecstasy or something; hec, even certified WF Teachers took Leave from the Path they once held so devoutly to their breasts and Served so nobly! Can we blame them for not holding up the WF DharmaSwords any longer? Hardly! Each of you know how terribly Steep and Direct the Path of WF is to practice, right? Well...

you Try making your living by Teaching IT! Trust me, those DharmaSwords get Real Heavy, Real Quick. Soon, all sutra studying and WF Sweat that you can spill comes up short when the Lower Chakras of Survival start getting tickled Rosy Red and Hot by Teaching this Iron Hot Plate of Dharma!

Through all the Snake and Student stressors, the Light of this Path glows ever more brightly. The Sacred Preciousness and Divine Amplitude of Chi and Insight and Wisdom is more powerful within my sport performances and practices and most importantly my Meditations then ever before. I reAwake more and more often to Receive that which the Holy Trinity - Creator, Destroyer, and Sustainer - download to me in multidimensional pathWays. All i ever get is new Imports of OM in various layers conducive to my Serving You.

So, as 2007 dawns upon my 45th year, and the 26th year of WF as a Service, my Temple finds itself once again a "mom and pop" Path of Karma Yoga. How utterly in tune with the Scriptures; "Out of the many there will be only a few." This Temple has allWays remained most Powerful this Way. Only my beloved, amazing Ananda and myself remain at the humble Helm; small yet fiercely Devoted to Serving and Protecting The Dharma in the Way of the Ancient Masters; one student by one student. Our conversations center upon you, your Practice, your Chi, your willingness to trek Upward toward the Highest Summit. When you choose to support us by purchasing a product or sending a tithe as in the Ancient Traditional Way, we embrace and kiss and We Know That This is a Go(o)d Road.

DL, due to her IMMENSE VOLUME, will be shut down for a while as we attempt to create a new version of her for the next year. Blessings to WF WebMaster, Hakado Ru as he rolls up his sleeves this holiday in order to Serve you through the Temple Maintenance of enhancing DL's capacities. You will soon hear the Temple Gong ring as loud and clear as a Wolf's Howl on the winter's Solstice announcing another new year of DL CHI and TEACHINGS and TRANSMISSIONS!

Coming up at the front of 2007 DL? I will announce the 2006 WF Online Student of the Year plus introduce to you a very, very Precious Dharma Gift for your Practice in 2007!

Of course, the WF SanghaLounge will be up and cranking as ever; currently, my DL on iPods+Nike is drawing a wonderful exchange; check it out and contribute!

In closing, i give you this passage from Joseph Campbell that was dedicated to me and my LifeWork of Wholistic Fitness by new Student Bill.

And so, to all of you i bow my head,
i open my heart,
i give you my Path to share for another Year
so long as it still feels go(o)d and helpful in your Self Cultivation...

HAPPY NEW YEAR from your Tiny, Powerful Temple Beneath the Sacred Peak!

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!

om so ti,

coach ilg and Ananda

***
For Coach Ilg for 'coming back again and again to his Students' and for helping my own Brother as well as my family and myself so powerfully and lovingly.
- Student Bill

"Bringing back the Gift to integrate it into a rational life is very difficult. What you have to bring back is something that the the world lacks - which is why you went to get it - and lacking it, the world does not know that it needs it. And so, on the return, when you come with your boon for the world and there is no receptions, what are you going to do? There are three possible reactions.

One answer is to say, "To hell with them, I'm going back to the woods." You buy yourself a dog and a pipe and let the weeds grow in the gate. You have come back to the world with your gift, and people look at you with glassy eyes, call you "a kook," and so you retreat. This is refusal of the return.

The second way is to say, "What do they want?" You have a skill. You can give them what they want, the commercial way. Then you have created a whole pitch for your expressivity, and what you had before gets lost. You have a public career, and you have renounced the jewel.

The third possibility is to try to find some aspect of the domain into which you have come that can receive a little portion of what you have to give. You try to find a means to deliver what you have found as the life boon in terms and in proportions that are proper to the world's ability to receive. It requires a good deal of compassion and patience. Look for cracks in the wall and give only to those who are ready for your jewel.

You do not have a complete adventure unless you do get back. There is a time to go into the woods and a time to come back, and you know which it is. Do you have the courage? It takes a hell of a lot of courage to return after you have been in the woods.

When the world
seems to be falling apart,
the rule is to hang onto your own bliss.
It's that life that survives.

Freedom to pass back and forth across the world division...is the talent of the master. The Cosmic Dancer, declares Nietzche, does not rest heavily in a single spot, but gaily, lightly, turn and leaps from one position to another."

In Memory of CD

The Associated Press today titled their story:
Body found on Chinese mountain ID'd

That body belonged to my old climbing friend and mentor, Charlie Fowler.

I could tell you a number of heart thumping and heart warming about Charlie, as could any number of Colorado climbers that tied into a rope with Charlie. The man, now a snow-covered body on a remote mountain in China, was a singular climbing tour de force. His first ascents, his photography, his travel diaries across the world on both rock and ice will continued to be enjoyed by hundreds and thousands of future generation climbers.

I suppose what i am saying is,
"Charlie, your Mountain Spirit will live on, my friend."

I'm going up to the nordic area.

CD, i'll ski a few kilometers on this day of days for you.

it's gonna be okay for you in the Bardo, my friend;
you got this Lead, no worries mate.
for you have trained and performed your entire life to summit that which is often UnSeen.

CD, thank you for living and sharing so fully that which you love to do.

Om Mani Padme Hung,
your ol' bro from back in the day

footnote: throughout the late seventies and eighties, i was a sponsored rock, ice, and high mountain athlete. having lived to age 30 when, at 16 i never even imagined i would survive that long, i kept a promise to myself to stop high level climbing and work on other sports, disciplines, and internal arts if i did mange to live to 30. i did. and i kept that promise to myself. that is why i am sure i am still alive to help others through Wholistic Fitness. Sport specificity - the imbalanced Nature of it - inevitably catches up with you.

Especially if you are a world class mountaineer.

iPod + Nike = SacReligion

So, i understand that Nike has merged with iPod and has thus begun a marketing
(read spirit-deconditioning) campaign to convince the UnAwakened masses
that to go for a run without being 'plugged in' is soooo uncool.

feeble ilg wonders,
"Would Steve Prefontaine train and race with an iPod?"
whatever happened to running while listening to and nourishing one's own Divinity!?!

am i the only one left on the planet unable and uncaring to find my iPod before a Cardio workout?

what the hell is so terribly bad about listening to the music of self, of breath, of ones own measured footfalls
with the sacred breast of Mother Earth?!?!???!?! i pause and wonder what the Ancient Himalayan trekking Yogis or
or own Ancient Native American footrunners
would think of wearing an iPod while on pilgrimage among the Sacred Peaks?

now, i reflect on all the runners and cyclists that nearly
wreck into me or are startled like electronically buzzed sheep when i run or cycle upon them while they
are so "plugged into" their cherished, expensive, and idiotic iPods.

did Nike* forget or did they just conveniently choose to ignore their roots;
the deeply seated wire-to-wire full best effort by a simple, humble Warrior named,
Pre?

Pre wanted to win, sure.
Yet, he Knew that how he chose to race
mattered far, far more.

"Racing is not about winning,
it's about knowing ourselves."
- coach ilg, 1985

WF Warriors,
we live in dangerous times...
so quick to forget our Root Teachers,
so quick to run toward the next more Imaged Thing,
so quick to sacrifice our Soul Nature for Outer Worldly things and circumstances.

i tell you this, Oh Seeker Of Union;
Stay True To That Which Scares You Most...
even if it means running wire to wire as fast you can
or climbing a rock with no rope to catch you...
for in doing so,
not only will you cultivate your Higher Self,
you will find your Higher Self again
and again
and endlessly again
along a humble, steep, windy Path
attacking a Direct Line up the Highest Summit of all...
a Tiny, Bejeweled Proven Path known as: Wholistic Fitness.

Keep it Real;
Keep it WF.

i love you all, beyond the present incarnation...

* i was one of Nike's first sponsored extreme athletes in the eighties when they launched their
ACG line. dined and wined by Nike for three years was great; basically a helicopter came by my
home in Colorado and dropped off a huge box of high tech, prototype outdoor sports gear
that i was to train in and provide feedback. i did. they dropped me when their ACG department
fell off in favor of providing a more Ghetto Feel for their basketball department.

Temple Note: coach ilg has held podiums and course records in running distances from 5k to 50 mile trail races.

December DL's...creating the "momentum to be there"

Hi Steve,
A steep path indeed my friend. I had dinner with {a fellow WF Online Student} tonight. We talked and talked about the WF Path, the grade, the positive effort, and the mystery that is Ilg.

I thought it might bring a smile to el coache's face to know that we up here in the NW think of you even when we aren't out sweating somewhere on a lone trail.

One of the topics that we explored a bit was the idea that every flight of stairs, every trail terminus, every peak, and every time one arrives back at home or the car and begins the process of peeling off layers, that perhaps that IS the podium that some of us aspire to. The ones with no other humans around and only one judge... oneself.

Every time I go out my door I am setting records.  The trail may twist and turn, the path may disappear from view at times, yet I always arrive at the finish line in time to cheer myself for having the momentum to be there.

Holiday Cheers to you and your family,

student chreist

Blessings to you Coach on this G(o)od day,
As has been My Blessing for these past 4 plus years, I take sacred time towards the end of each month to review all your DL postings. Re-read them and make notes in my WF Yoga Journal.  Sometimes I must reread a line or posting over and over again to GET it----never pass a word or Teaching until I TAF I have at least got an inkling of its Teaching. December was chock full of JUICE----caffeinated high test fuel for my Practice and Journey......Thank You.

My heart-felt Thanks to You and Joy for your time, attention and generosity in keeping the Sangha heading Inward and thus Upward.  I love you both and send heart to heart hugs in this m(om)ent.

WF Warrior Secrest Breaks World Ultra Cycling Record!

My friend Michael Secrest from Scottsdale, AZ whom some of you WF Devotees may recognize from my books, just broke the World Record for 24 hours of continuous cycling on October 22, 2006. The Two Wheeling Warrior rode 534.75 miles at an astonishing average speed of 22.28 mph! He set the mark at the Home Depot ADT Event Center in Carson, CA.

I crewed for Michael when he set the 24-hour World Record in 1996 at the Dominguez Hills velodrome in CA. This time, he somehow managed to bear through the excruciating pain of non-stop hammering for 24-hours on a tiny indoor track!!! i drew MUCH inspiration from Michael when i supported him in '96. Talk about Dharana! I doubt if there is a Studio Yogi living that can even comprehend the mental frame of concentration required to do what Michael does. Since he refuses to stop for ANYTHING, Michael uses a catheter to go to the bathroom without scrubbing any speed.

in an era when most people are addicted to comfort and "make it okay" to "feel good" about being obese*, at least our WF Tribe is still out there in Kali Yuga; being the ROCKY BALBOA's of the Inner, Focused, WARRIOR WAY!

when i asked Michael about his new Word Record, he wrote back, "Not bad for 53, eh?"

not bad a'tall, my Brother Warrior, not bad a'tall!

read more about Michael's record and...help support his next attempt in the spring of 07 as he attempts to go 550 miles in 24 hours on an indoor 333.3 meter track in MOSCOW! He needs OUR support! tell him, "coach ilg sent me!"

Coach In Yoga Journal? The Rumor is Settled NOW!

Is this coach ilg now appearing in Yoga Journal? Below, i settle the rummor once and for all!

A handful of Alert WF Warriors wrote in to ask if that was me in the February, 07 issue of Yoga Journal.

"I don't know," came my reply, "i don't subscribe to mainstream magazines. And Yoga Journal sure as hec never asked my permission."

"I'm sure it's you..you are in Vrkasana balanced on tree roots by a lake. You are in your capri's and your WF Training Mala is on your left wrist."

"I don't remember doing a photo shoot like that," i told another who wrote in.

"Dude, no yogi has a backside like you, it's you. i know it is," wrote one more.

then, Most Noble WF Online Student NWSM took it upon himself to cut out the picture and send it to me. It arrived yesterday.

i will officially end the rumor:

Yup.

dat's me, awlright.

It was taken a few years ago when i still lived in LA.

Mike Powell, a WF Student and former bike racing teammate of mine took that shot. Mike - of Sports Illustrated fame and photog veteran of 3 Tour de Frances as well as the photographer for THE WINTER ATHLETE strength training shots - got that pic of me near Malibu Lake up in the Santa Monica Mountains during a day-long shoot with several top yogini models (yup, that was a Blessed Day indeed!) for Getty Images. During the walk back to the Getty trailer, Mike yanked me aside as his mind created this shot and said, "Ilg, scramble down this embankment and do a pose while standing on those tree roots, the light is great right now...hurry!"

"No worries," i said, dashing through the bramble. the moment i merged with the Tree Energy i recalled my years of doing "Touching Soul Of Tree," in the Ai Imawa Taoist Yoga Postures. Immediately sensing a wonderful union with this cherished Sycamore, my body just went into Tree Pose (Vrkasana). Mike's talent took care of the rest.

Throughout the years, many stock images of your ol' coach doing all sorts of sports and fitness activities have been caught floating around in various books and magazines. Keep your eye out and maybe one will catch you with your Spine Straight and your Breath Conscious.

Great Awareness Tribal Warriors!

"Where are you between two thoughts?"

There is no Practice quite like Holiday and Family Practice!
The yogi is trained to participate fully in the family and Outer World
yet maintains his or her Inner World as the true and steadfast Source of

Immersed in the Holiday Practice, relying on Early Morning Ritual and the WF Lifestyle Principles...
i Trust that you are being radiant and strong in your Wholiday Practice as well!

Happy Wholy-days to You, our Beautiful WF Sangha

We've covered a whole lot of varied terrain and mystical ether again this year in DL and so,
From Beneath the Sacred Peak, we send heart-felt wishes for you and your
family to share a Sacred Wholiday Celebration in what ever form may it assume. For those
celebrating Christmas; Birth of Jesus, Hanukkah;The Festival of Lights, Navaratri;
The Nine Divine Nights (a Hindu Festival) Kwanzaa: based on the seven guiding principles
in the African culture, or the Winter Soul-stice here on Turtle Island. The Paths are Many, Truth is One.

In closing we offer you this prayer gifted us from HP Yogini Shanyn:

May God bless us with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that we will live
deep in our hearts. May God bless us with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people and the earth,
so that we will work for justice, equity, and peace. May God bless us with tears to shed for those who suffer,
so we will reach out our hands to comfort them and change their pain to joy. And may God bless us with the
foolishness to think that we can make a difference in the world, so we will do the things which
others say cannot be done.

The Grinch Who SnowShoed Christmas?

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more?"

- Dr. Seuss

OF ALL BANDHAS GREAT AND SMALL (aka; Where Babies Come From)

OF ALL BANDHAS GREAT AND SMALL (aka; Where Babies Come From)
by coach ilg, ryt/uscf/cpt

(Note; for Student Use, i will keep a copy of this essay in the WF SanghaLounge within the "Yoga" cave.)

"As a kid, i used to practice Mula Bandha on long chairlift rides nearly every winter day. Though i did not know the Source of these Inner Instructions, nor even the Intent of these Inner Practices, i still did them. Blind Faith, you might call it. I later realized that i was simply picking up Inner Work leftover from previous lives."
- coach ilg
excerpt from an upcoming book
photo; telemarking at Parajito. photo by Ananda.

Bandha
as in Mula Bandha;
the Lock at the Root which seals off and thus prevents the unconscious leakage of our life force. Steve Marlowe, my 'zero-tolerance' bicycle commuter and racing teammate used to shout, "GO Mr. Muuuuuuula BANdha!" when i jumped off the front of bike race or attacked a hillclimb when i lived in Los Angeles. i owe my recovery from spinal fracture and pelvic detonation to a steadfast gripping and training of Mula Bandha.

In forward folds and particularly when doing the "Inner Cleansing Techniques" like 'stomach rolling', Mula Bandha must be activated to ensure proper energetic transmission and purification. photo of coach in a "WF Toilet Yoga" program.

Bandha
as in Uddiyana Bandha;
the "Flying Upward Lock" of yogic empowerment science that tends to mystify many Westerners yet promises each of us victory over such massive obstacles like food, sleep, dis-ease, and even death. This Bandha holds us at gunpoint to the bowling bowl of lethargy that resides in our 'pooch' area. This lethargy is actually the Princess Kundala, slumbering awaiting our bravery to arouse and seduce Her upward, thus the name; Upward Flying.

While you are just sitting and shitting, i am refining my chances for Enlightenment. It's all a matter of Willingness. No better place to train the small muscles required for Uddiyanic development than in my unique "Toilet Yoga" routines, available only to WF Online Students due to safety. These routines are POWERFUL catalysts to the energetics of Enlightenment. photo by Ananda.

Bandha as in Jalandhara Bandha; the seductive Net at the Throat Center which, when grabbed and mastered, captures the dripping of the inner solar energies and luxuriates a busy mind into her analgesic balm of lunar nectar. Nothing quite like the meditative wash of Jalandhara that also prevents immature facilitation of cosmic energies.

MOMMIE AND ME
As a Wholistic Fitness Student, i am trained to "Question All Word Choices." This is a WF Technique used to attain a yogic goal of "Speech Purification." What else has conditioned your Reality besides words? Nothing. Our egoic shell began forming around our True Nature when perhaps our mother first grabbed our tiny hand and gently patted our'self' with it while repeating, "Steve..." then lifted our hand to pat herself while repeating, "Mommie."

"Steve"

"Mommie."

This is YOU and this am ME. (read; "we are different from each other.")

The Separation of Self and UniVerse began there and has only accelerated and intensified for many of us, until our Awakening.

Words. Be VERY care-full with them. If used unConsciously, they are Bombs. Destructors of Unity. Instigators of Duality.

BACK TO BANDHA AND BEYOND
Bandha. In Sanskrit, the now accepted language of Yoga, the word Bandha means, "Restraint" or "Bondage".

Like everything in yoga, the word Bandha is chock full of multilayered meaning. Some range from the gross anatomical gripping of the uro-genital triangle muscles to the more etheric such as the bonding of our base layer mindwaves (manas) to spiritual ignorance (avidya). This is just the start. A more refined meaning of Bandha refers to the adhesion of layers of our consciousness (cit) being glued via avidya to the taking and retaking of lives through a depressing cycle of life, tension, death, and rebirth.

To expound for a moment on that last sentence: have you ever considered why most babies scream like hell coming out into this world? have you ever considered why or studied how the Enlightened Ones are allWays born in very auspicious manner?

An unEnlightened Being experiences (re)birth with a lot of Pain; Pain for Mom certainly, yet far more for the in-fant. The in-fant was just sailing about in In-fantity (Infinity; why do you think they are called "In-fants?). Suddenly, their ageless Soul took another Form (kinda like words except in the Soul Realm). Bingo bango; the overpopulated Human Realm gets another unEnlightened Being!

Before babie-hood, we actually Woke Up during what we grown ups call 'death' only to Realize, 'oh crap, i did not do the Inner Work last time to get Free (moksha)," and well, as we begin our re-Entry into a new incarnation through 'birth' we are still close enough to In-fanity to Realize, "i REALLY don't want to go through all this again! WHAAAA, WHAAA!!!"
And if the realize of our lifelong suffering again ain't enough at the moment of our 'birth' to add more insult to our ongoing avidya, the 'good doctor' slaps us a few times as our Welcome Wagon to the Human Realm.

However, those of you who are going deep into your WF Practices already have Realized all this fundamental stuff and are thus determined to gain the top step of this Human Race; Enlightenment. Freedom from reBirth...Freedom from Avidya.

"The root of all human suffering is (spiritual) ignorance."
- Buddha.

How did the Buddha Wake Up?

Well, He started out by realizing the folly of trying to find Freedom and Happiness in anything or anyone outside our self. He renounced the Outer World, drew His senses inward, and began just like where you and i are each morning: returning again and again to Mula Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha, and Jalandhara Bandha. To Seal Off the outward directed senses and energies is Job Numero One.

As i continued to contemplate the Word Choice of 'Bandha," i drew a slash in the word after the "d".

Band.

As in, "Oh man, i've got these bands in my neck that are killing me!"

Such bands are locks, seals, preventing the flow of Prana in that area.

Make Sense?

Go(o)d.

Now,
go forward, upward, and most of DEEPER into your Daily Word Choices and Posture and Breath and enjoy being a skilled hunter of your Inner World.

It is really the only World that will matter on (y)our final exhale.

om so ti,
your humble coach

2006 HIGH PERFORMANCE YOGI OF THE YEAR GOES TO...

For the past year beneath the Sacred Peak, Ananda and i have brought the Fire and Light of the Steep, Direct Path of HP Yoga - the yogic subdiscipline of Wholistic Fitness - to a small Warrior Tribe of Seekers fearless to do the Inner Work.

Among them was one warrior, whose appearance in the Cave each week was as steadfast as the arrival of Grandfather Sun's and Grandmother Moon's dance across the sensual shape of the Sacred Peak. (photo of the Sacred Peak by coach, last week)

The final HP Yoga Class of 2006 was a well advertised "HP Yoga Strong Flow" that brought out only the Highest of Warriors...including our 2006 HP Yogi of the Year; Dr. Bob. From L-R; top row: chris, ben, sara, maria, valerie. bottom row; L-R: Teacher Ananda, 2006 HP Yogi of the Year Dr. Bob, and coach. not shown; photographer and our newest HP Yogi; Bill.

It is with deep honor that i give to the worldwide WF Sangha; Dr. Bob Morrissey of Flagstaff, Arizona as my 2006 High Performance Yogin of the Year!

Dr. Bob, as is his HP Yogi name, racked up 44 HP Yoga Classes this year,
demonstrating the epitome of Warrior Consistency (Abhyasa), a number which is quite something considering i only offer one class per week.

Dr. Bob received a "HP Yogi Warrior Of The Year" certificate along with a very
special Rudraksha Mala from Coach that has been simmering in the WF Temple Zendo for an entire year. (For the yogic story of Rudraksha Beads, visit the DIRECT LINES cave in the WF SanghaLounge!).

A champion flying disc athlete as well as a devoted distance runner, Dr. Bob is the precise type of multi-disciplined Warrior that hallmarks a HP Yogi. It ain't fancy poses that gets a Warrior to Enlightenment; it is Discipline across the human capacities. And Dr. Bob is unafraid to go for long mountain runs directly into a HP Yoga Class; perfect! His journey through HP Yoga
has produced a long string of insights, muscle aches, and ever ascending chi!

DL was lucky enough to nab a sparse interview with the seemingly yet not really agoraphobic Doctor
before autographic hounds surrounded the esteemed Sadhaka Turned Swami:

DL: Dr. Bob, what do you think of your HP Yogi Award and the special Rudraksha Mala from coach?

Dr. Bob: oh God, that was my worse class i ever. i hurt. that was tough.

DL: Uh, yeah, but what do you think about the recognition?

Dr. Bob: my entire left leg is shaking.

DL: Okay, uh, what was your most memorable moment of the past 44 classes with Coach and Ananda and the Flagstaff HP Yogi's?

Dr. Bob: i think i have to go home now.

Wow, well, there you have it; The Sparse Words From A Tired Champion Warrior Athlete. Hey, this Tribe has allWays been just about the Practice, baby!

A Wall That WF Helped Build...MINDFULLY!

I have to tell you, Oh Noble WF Sangha,

Trust In The Master, Ascend the Mountain; No Matter What

One great master in the nineteenth century had a disciple who was very thick-headed. The master had taught him again and again, trying to introduce him to the nature of his mind. Still he did not get it. Finally, the master became furious and told him:

Look, I want you to carry this bag full of barley up to the top of that mountain over there. But you must not stop and rest. Just keep on going until you reach the top.

The disciple was a simple man, but he had unshakable devotion and trust in his master, and he did exactly as he had been told. The bag was heavy and it took him a long time.

At last, when he reached the top, he dropped the bag. He slumped to the ground, overcome with exhaustion, but deeply relaxed. All his resistance had dissolved, and with it his ordinary mind. At that instant, he suddenly realized the nature of his mind. He ran back down the mountain, and, against all convention, burst into his masters room.

I think I have got it now!I have really got it!

His master smiled at him knowingly.

So you had an interesting climb up the mountain, did you?

WF Sutra Studies. Coaching Contentment; by Way of the Ancient Sources

WF SUTRA STUDIES
with Coach Ilg
for DL Subscribers Only

"When all the nadis are now full of impurities become purified, then only can the yogi successfully perform pranayama."

*

"So, one should practice pranayama with a mind in which the sattivic element prevails until the Sushumna nadi is freed from the impurities."

Verses 5 & 6, Chapter 2 - Hatha Yoga Pradipika

If you are not doing regular Pranayam or at least mindfully attempting to sustain Ujjayi Pranayam during your asana classes or sessions, do not skip this DL. It will 'hit' your cells at a level so that when you do finally Shift Higher and are devoted to raising your Vibrational Fitness above and beyond that of the common man, certain spiritual underpinnings will be in place enabling you to take great flight over your current struggles with duality.

in other words, it is always a go(o)d thing to read DL, if not study it as your Practice of Svadhaya. the Students are are moving Higher Faster and Safer always go straight to DL as their spiritual food. then, they chew on it, contemplate it, and Practice the DharmaTeachings which i interlace between the black and white words of these thousands of entries. All of my effort during these years is not for me. i could take the Divine Downloads that continue to pour through my Practice Sessions and daily life and just run back to the High Mountains of my childhood and suckle all the Wisdom for my own spiritual gain.

yet, that is not Yoga. that is certainly not being a Karma Yogin; Selfless Service which is the type of yogi that i am. soon enough, my public life and track record will be left for the Outer World to ignore or perhaps one day realize. for now, it is important that you and i keep our Practice Strong and Sincere and focused upon Balance Across The Capacities of our Human Body and Spirit. This is known as "Wholistic Fitness" and it is go(o)d stuff!

*

let us revisit Verse 5 and re-read it to-get-Her ("Her refers to the Princess Kundala; the Kundalini Force at the root of the subtle spine):

"When all the nadis are now full of impurities become purified, then only can the yogi successfully perform pranayama."

the great Yogi Swatmarama wrote down these two verses - along with the rest of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika - in the 17th century, compiling these words from the orally transmitted Teachings of the Ancient Sources.

these Sutras (thread like) are intended to be short for easy mental consumption by the Student. by 'easy' i mean, simple to memorize.

it may require a lifetime or more to actually realize and be able to Practice the Teaching of any one of these hundreds of Sutras.

welcome to yoga.

genuine, ancient yoga.

the type of yoga that can only be understood as it was inTended; from a Teacher With Direct Experience to a sincere, hard sweating Student.

the word "successfully" in the above verse means that the Student finally understands by Direct Experience the difference between Air and Ether, two of the Five Constituents of Prakriti or the manifest universe. the word "successfully" means that the Student can FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY feel the textural difference in the 'weight of the currents' from a Pranic or Life Force stance. the only way to get to this incredible stance is to purify the nadis (subtle channels) through assigned breathing Practices known as Pranayama. without nadic purification, the diverse currents will not enter the main Energetic Freeway system of Enlightenment known as Sushumna or the Most Gracious Channel.

what are the 'impurities' of these subtle channels? a fractured, overloaded nervous system from too much media, emotional, and mental input (see yesterday's DL) and overeating, over or undersleeping and imbalanced physical exercise. for example, if we catch ourselves being laterally dominant (always using one hand and one leg system more dominantly in daily life than the other) then, the yogi will not be able to "successfully" perform pranayama. meaning; your most powerful energetics will not enter Sushumna. instead, the pranic currents start agitating the subtle fields of physiology and psychology and you become even more imbalanced. this is why Wholistic Fitness is designed so wisely; to train the physical nervous and muscular system until she is in Balanced Symmetry through cardio, strength training, asana, meditation, and nutrition BEFORE attempt to fan the cosmic fire by pranayama. one reason we have such Imbalanced Yoga Teachers and systems these days is simple; no one is Patient enough to follow the Ancient Way. in this humble Temple beneath the Sacred Peak; we are.

How Clean Is Your Inner Firewood?
Pranayama ignites whatever Inner Fuel you currently contain. If your diet is poor, your fitness imbalanced, and your mind fractured, then Pranayama will only intensify those weaknesses. this is why a Teacher must be working with you one-on-one to help you properly clean up your inner fuel before ignition of your Higher Energies.

in the first years of Practice, we must make fit our nervous system because the nadic system is the subtle aspect of the nervous system. when modern studio yogis go into classes taught by inexperienced 'teachers' and begin doing pranayama, the prana will not enter Sushumna because the Student has not been appropriately, accurately, and slowly instructed on how to purify the nadis. coupled with this is the all too frequent fact that the modern yoga student does not Practice the ethical or moral constructs of the ladder of Yoga; the yamas and the niyamas.

until the Etheral Breath (prana) is controlled and directed into and if even Purification work has been done by the Student and actually enters the Sushumna, then Unmani Avasta is attained; the control of the pran into Sushumna. this Podium of the Hatha Yogi is inDeed the attainment of the 'object' of Hatha Yoga; the object is the union of "ha" and "tha", the union of pranic currents in their appropriately purified channels which leads to an incredibly Sacred Stillness and immense Seat of Inner Power and Wisdom.

in Wholistic Fitness, we use my unique Teachings of "At-Sink Pranayam" each morning (as part of another trademarked WF Practice; 'Early Morning Ritual'), to produce a drastically fast, safe, and enjoyable manner of unmatched steadfast Pranayam practice. This Divine Power coming into our system is what Shifts the WF body from reliance upon the gross "NeuroMuscular System" to the far more fun and powerful, "Pranic System" and shifts the Mental State from a yo-yo swinging between Rajas and Tamas (chaotic, uncontrolled or heavy, depressed) to a mind that is Sattvic; composed, elegant, coordinated, and most of all; content.

yup, even during the Holidays; utter contentment is the sure sign that you have been steadfast and MINDFUL in your Pranayama; the Gateway To The Divine Power Locked Within.

that is enough for today.

perhaps i will touch on Verse 6 at a later time.

if you seem interested.

if not,
hey, i am pacing the Energies of WF and Her Transmission into the Outer World based on YOUR willingness, YOUR fierce devotion, YOUR desire to Rise Ever Higher, Ever Deeper, and
Ever Inward.

that is all.

om so ti,
your loving coach across the body/mind board

Coach Denied Cat. 3 Upgrade; Gets MTB Expert Upgrade

"I've always said that a WF Warrior must be content with being an 'Endless Beginner'!"

Coach shows the "Oh Well!" gesture after a very cold and windy Club Training Ride of 53 miles averaging 18.3 mph. A former Category 2 Racer a long time ago and Coach to several "Hall of Fame" cyclists, Coach was denied an Upgrade to a Category 3 from a 4 in spite of top ten and podium finishes in nearly every race he entered last season. He was, however, upgraded to "Expert" Category in MTB racing, a level where he also used to race at in Colorado in the eighties. Coach did not race bikes for over a decade during his Los Angeles "spiritual mission" of Yoga Teaching in the big city. At 45 years old, how high can the MultiDisciplined Mountain Yogi and Teacher re-climb the high Standard of Cycling once again?

"I don't know," he replied, "however, as a Spiritual Athlete, it does not matter what Category you race in. What matters is that you develop the Will Power to overcome negative habits of mind that prevent you from toeing the Start Line and doing your Best against your peers. Will Power helps us overcome the desires that lead us away from our Inner Self. The only Race to win that matters to me is the Human Race; my desire is to stand on top of the Podium of the Human Race; to be Enlightened. Because i have chosen to be a Teacher more than a Sadhaka, it might take me many more lifetimes, however,
i have learned a thing or two about pacing this lifetime, and i Know that i am on pace for Enlightenment. This is what turns me on, not getting Category upgrades against sport-specific athletes! i learned long ago that to be a Master of Wholistic Fitness is synonymous with being an Endless Beginner."

Life In Kali Yuga; Saved By WF

From the Associated Press This Week:
"Over the next 12 months, Americans are projected to average more than 9 1/2 hours a day with the media, according to statistics in a new government report. Hours spent doing two things at once, such as watching TV and using the Internet, are counted twice in the report.

That's more time than they spend doing anything else, except breathing."

COMPARE WITH:
From the Wholistic Fitness Teachings Created by Coach Engaged Since 1982:

WF Media Fast:
"On the Day this is prescribed in your Training, do not read any newspaper or magazine, do not watch any TV, do not do any Internet surfing, or listen to any radio."

WF Lifestyle Principle Number One:
"Breath and Posture."

Holiday Spirit...on mini skis!

okay,
for some of us mountain yogi's the Holiday Spirit hits in different ways...
two days ago, i was again the first local to ski down our local ski area from top to bottom.
this may not seem that great, i know.
however,
i was first because
1) the ski area was closed
and
2) a third of the mountain only had an average of a few inches,
not even enough to cover the smallest of rocks.

now, what kind of a WF Warrior would i be if i was afraid of a few (million) rocks to bother my enjoyment of skiing, eh?

hey, welcome to Skiing in Arizona, baby! you gotta REALLY be creative if you are skier living here!
here, let me take you along...

Fresh Snow!
wake up...see that the Peak has been Blessed with new snow...crank off Early Morning Ritual (tm), prioritizing my "old faithful" routine; The Rock Vinyasa (tm), which is a sure cure for overcoming a stiff lower back and freeing up the Power Chain Musculature of the hips (see my DL on the hips earlier this week)...with my internal engine pre-lubed with Pranayama, Meditation, and Rock Vinaysa, i took a few Action Caps, Sport Caps, Metabalance 44, and BioBuilde and i was Empty, Light, and RARING to go...like allWays! THANK YOU, WF! For being such a TREMENDOUS best friend!

first headwall of my 2,635' K'tooled ascent up the ski runs. if it were up to me? i'd vote for snowmaking in exchange for the ski lifts! who needs ski lifts? Snowshoe Thompson didn't! neither does ilg! well, at least when i am training to defend Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon titles!

within 70 minutes i had plowed, stumbled, and floated up to the highest point of the ski area, the top of the Agassiz chairlift at 11,500'. this is the view looking toward Mt. Humphreys, the highest peak in the Grand Canyon State (according to the records i can find, i have the Ascent/Descent Record of this beast; just under two hours). Hey, the WF Path works because i have been field testing EVERYTHING i teach for a quarter century of elite performance; the SUNRIDER Herbs, the HP Yoga routines, the Strength Training Techniques, all of it, all of it, ALL of it was born and refined in these high cradles of the Mountain Gods. you get the Benefit!
out of the running crampons and onto the MiniSkis!!!
ahhhh!!! if only there was a World MiniSki Championships...i'd make the podium or die trying! go ahead... laugh at my tiny "kid skis" that i grew up on in Durango, Colorado as a child! you might be surprised at how efficient these little toys can be on the Steeps and the Shallows! you might find yourself hurtin' trying to keep up with ol' coach on these kiddie toys! LOVE IT!!!!!

LAYIN' DOWN (MiniSki) FIRST TRACKS...YEAH BABY!!!!
HOWWWWWWWWWL!!!!!!!!!!!
who SAYS skiing ain't good on the Sacred Peak these days? it is GREAT SKIING for a WF WARRIOR!
we ADAPT to conditions through our ski and bravery to just get out
and
get
it
done!!!!

VIVA LA MINI SKIS!!!!!!!

Hips Tight? Fight Fire With Fire!

Hey Coach, I'm going to try to make your yoga class tomorrow - I think it should be just the answer to finals stress.

So my sister and my mom both have your Basic Strength HP Yoga DVD now. My sister is doing really well with it (it sounds like anyway) and so far, my mom has only watched it, not actually done it (but it's a start for her). But she did loan it to her yoga instructor, who apparently loved it and ordered her own copy! I feel so fortunate to have you two right here in Flagstaff!

see you!
V

the yogi must become a Self Scientist. the workshop of the hip attachments make for a world class teacher of anatomy; each origin and insertion of the muscles orchestrating the hip joint? they often come fully loaded with karmic, genetic, and emotional baggage; Warrior BeWare! For those of us who do not shy away from endurance or strength work? We are in for even MORE of a greater battle to free and keep free the energetics within our hips; however, the Greater The Battle? The Greater the Warrior! Warrior UP!

Dear Coach,
oh my god. until i started doing yoga with you i had NO IDEA how much shit i carry around in my hips! they are sooooo tight! trying to get my hips open is going to be waaaaaaaaaaaaay harder than racing bikes! i don't know how you do all you do and still keep such a high degree of flexibility! is there ANYTHING MORE i can do to open my hips?! i understand now what you mean about "release your hips and find your Power!" i am determined! i went to a local yoga class and asked the teacher what i can do and she just said that i should 'accept the tightness and let the internal grace flow into the tightness.' what does that mean?

your tightness student ever,
mark, WA

Most Noble Warrior With The Angry Hips,
that is another Blessing associated with having a fractured spine and smashed pelvis, i KNOW by DIRECT EXPERIENCE just what it means to be the most inflexible person on the planet! Paralysis is pretty dang stiff!

the tightness in your hips is Fear Based. there is Anger in your hips. there is poision in your hips. poison burns, that is why your hips burn so much once you find a posture that really brings your 'edge' up front and center and glaringly painful.

sure you have to 'accept' the fact that you, whether in this lifetime or previous ones, have tried to run away from lower chakral work. you've tried to hit a home run while not stepping on first base; the lower chakras.

because of the 'fire' that is in your hips, i say, "Fight fire (tapas) with fire (tapas)." that is how the brave forest fire fighters take the anger out of raging wildfires down here and i suggest that you do the same technique for your hips. fortunately for you, i have fantastic hip-opening yoga programs in my dvds and books. however, be not attached to any book, dvd, or yoga classes. instead, use Solo Sessions to fight the fire in your hips. Move doing yoga to a Higher Priority; place it in the front of your training disciplines for a while. research the DL Archives for my Teaching; "The Poision In Our Hips."

taking a namby pamby, oh-everything-is-just-happy-and-good attitude will not work for battling all the fear packed, angry emotional residue that is lurking, growling in your hips. in this Steep and Direct Path, we take the Warrior Approach; ATTACK! rush out onto the BattleField of your Hips like Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, both swords drawn (determination and concentration), and begin to SLAY THE DRAGONS within your hips!

be not afraid;
stay devoted to becoming like a cat; free and open and utterly powerful and fast!
this is the Warrior Body! capable of great feats and even greater Love than others for we have not run around our Fear Locked Body...we have SLAYED the root of our Anger and thus
are Transformed!

go now, Oh Noble Warrior, and get beyond the stinging sweat that lies within your hip opening efforts...and keep going until you find the Great Stillness Beyond The Sweat.

i will meet you There.

om so ti,
coach ilg

WF Spelling Error Arises With New Online Student

What follows is an actual Online Training exchange with a very new Student...
May This Exchange Deepen Your Understanding of WF; Her Heart, Her Fierceness, Her Highest Care of Your Highest Self...

dedicated to Practice until the end,

***
Dear Coach Ilg,
Your advice on becoming more spiritual and calm was much appreciated. I really
think I do belong in a peaceful, introspective environment. I am already taking
breaths, trying to remeber every 15 minutes to do so.

COACH (interrupting the correspondence):
First,
let us begin with your Spelling...then work toward the Spiritual, okay?
first things first.

in my Tradition,
we use Mindful Spelling as a Way to become more Conscious.
i will not continue any of our facilitations if i spot more than 3 spelling errors, the first will be in honor of Buddha's patience with the unAwakened, the second spelling error that i see will be to honor the the flow of the Dharma which tolerates all the dance of the gunas (the three forms of the manifest UniVerse) with impeccable beauty, and the third spelling error that i spot will NOT be tolerated due to respect for the Sangha, the community of the like-minded spiritual warriors who are doing their best each day and in myriad ways to Rise Higher. if i allow you to be UnConscious in Spelling, then i am in effect training you to be unConscious in other areas of your life as well, and doing that would mean that i myself am disrespecting and blemishing the Fierce Quality of Love of the Master Teachers of whom i represent by Lineage. i cannot do that.

•? do you understand and accept this Teaching?

Yoga's Grand Central Station; The WF Physique and Physiology

it is true that asana (the sustained stretching exercise component of yoga) can in fact create a 'longer, sleeker' appearance to the physique than does a strict bodybuilding or weightlifting only program. Asana, i suppose it can be said, creates a 'cat-like' physique as opposed to a 'bulldozer' physique from gym-only training or an anorexic, imbalanced physique common to sport-specfic endurance athletes. photo: coach's "body vehicle this time around," as he refers to his 44-year old 'carriage of the spirit'. as is evident, a firm Practice in asana does not take away the much coveted "ripped" look from a Wholistic Fitness physique. What matters most to a WF Warrior however, is that the balanced physique is also balanced in all of the physiologic capacities of a human body. For most of us, attaining such elite mastery of physique plus world class function in all physiologic disciplines will require the rest of our lives. "Hey," says coach referring to this seemingly endless pursuit of genuine yoga or Balance, "It keeps us off the streets!" photo by www.waynewilliamsstudio.com
***

Dear Coach,
i am 19 and am currently doing your "Cosmic Yang" weight program (OUCH!!!!). it's really hard to explain to my training partners about your techniques and things like, "Being elegant" in the gym. i have not been doing yoga or too much cardio (except on an exercise bike a little) because my friends tell me that if i do yoga or too much cardio my muscles will smooth out from the yoga and get skinny from the cardio. i don't know what to do. i know you are busy, and you don't have to write me back, but i am confused and getting kinda bummed out on everything."
- Terrance, NY

Most Noble Young Warrior T,
first, i bow to your Devoted Practice.
second, it is true that asana (the sustained stretching exercise component of yoga) can in fact create a 'longer, sleeker' appearance to the physique than does a strict bodybuilding or weightlifting only program. Asana, i suppose it can be said, creates a 'cat-like' physique as opposed to a 'bulldozer' physique from gym-only training or an anorexic, imbalanced physique common to sport-specfic endurance athletes. as you know, Strength Training is the FIRST Fitness Discipline of Wholistic Fitness. before even Cardio (to build balanced joint health) and even before Yoga. why? because besides imparting a vital infrastructure to the human capacity, Strength Training builds something even more beautiful and powerful than a balanced, lean physique; Strength Training builds GUMPTION! Gumption to blast through doubts, perceived limits of mind, and most of all, Strength Training teaches us the CHI of at least become aware of if not demolishing our "granthis" or pyschospiritual blockages.

in the WF Medicine Wheel of Life; Strength Training is best served under while young. the Iron Temple imparts many profound astral Teachers for a young warrior or warrioress. in mid-life, Strength Training can often be minimized while yoga and cardio are prioritized. as we grow older, Strength Training must again be re-elevated, although not so high as when we are young.

with enough Training, the WF Warrior achieves a physique and more importantly a physiology that is utterly balanced and capable within all the human capacities. this physiologic fitness must be gained through steadfast training (abhyasa) on the physical (gross) level first - which will probably require most of our current lives to attain- then, in a Divine Training Effect, our Balanced, Wholistic Physique and Physiologic Fitness trickles into and transforms our Subtle, then Refined sheaths.
thus, if a 355 lb Back Squat comes "easy" to some folks, they should not harbor too much pride, because they must always develop as much fitness in their endurance and suppleness fitness as well.

we must never forget that it is through our multi-disciplined fitness, actions, words, and thoughts that we have achieve genuine yoga or union with Balance. if we choose to remain infatuated only with our performances in the gym or on the yoga mat or in cardio or even on the meditation cushion, we cannot put an end to our suffering and the causes of our suffering because our true potential, our buddha nature, is to awaken ALL of the human capacities in us. Until our Wholistic Fitness is completely awakened and we are freed from our ignorance of sport and/or physiologic specificity to merge with the deathless, enlightened mind/body/spirit, then there can be no end to the round of life and death.

if we only do 'yoga' for instance, we can get very high and mighty and we meet certain Teachers and we think that we have 'found our guru'...usually some old guy from India. that is all great, fine, and dandy. yet i say unto you, Oh Noble Young Warrior, the Teachers that you meet in only ONE DISCIPLINE can only introduce you to your Inner Teachers from ONE OF YOUR SPIRITUAL FAMILY!

there are as many Inner Teachers as there are human capacities. thus, to gain liberation, we must assume the fullest possible responsibility for ourselves now in this body. if we choose only to develop fitness in one of our capacity categories, our suffering will go on not only for a few more lives but for thousands of lives.

it is this humbling knowledge that makes even the most expert athletes or yogis turn and run away from Wholistic Fitness. in this Path, we do not elevate or even consider spending precious time enjoying that which comes easy to us naturally or even the mastery of a once difficult physiologic category. instead, we in this Path are trained to constantly hunt down our restrictions and weakness and imbalances and negative tendencies and sport or discipline addictions that we intuitively know we need to overcome. we prize that which the Ancient Masters prized; that our future lives are more important even than this one, because there are many more that await us in the future. As Sogyal Rinpoche taught, "This long-term vision governs how they live. They know if we were to sacrifice the whole of eternity for this life, it would be like spending our entire life savings on one drink, madly ignoring the consequences."

No shortcuts around the body; WF Rule Number One!
most athletes and yogis sacrifice the whole of their eternity for becoming 'good' in one area of their capacities.
the WF Warrior is content to be discontent with anything except the Highest of All Summits; The Grand Potential of Being Human...Enlightenment.

i share the following TAF's (thoughts and feelings) with you all today in celebration of Relationship Yoga cave.

• How often do you recognize something special about your partner,
spouse and/or friend and never verbally share it with them?

• How often do you choose to celebrate the beautiful Divine qualities which your partner, spouse and/or friend posses verses that which you TAF they lack?

• When's the last time you dance and sang and just allowed yourself to
be a receptive child full of freedom and spontaneity with your partner, spouse and/or friend?

• When's the last time you just stopped what you were doing, especially in the middle of something challenging, and just asked your partner, spouse and/or friend for what Coach and i call a "recharge m(OM)ement." For example: Coach ilg and i will embrace in a hug, heart to heart and breathe two-gether.

• When's the last time you went up to your partner, spouse and/or perhaps an intimate friend and gave them a sensual kiss on the mouth,
maybe even a little tongue action (*-*) and then allowed that to be all!?
No need (unless it organically Arises - and i'm not speaking of that...)
to take the kiss any further. Just allow the kiss to be the m(OM)ment.

Amazing how such "simple" actions can completely shift the energy between two people. The creation of intimacy has overcome any need for a 'sexual' experience. You are FULL in that moment.

Now what happens if the other person is not willing to receive your affection, your demonstration of Metta, in that moment?

That's a great question for contemplation.

For it takes a mutal Willingness to "step out" of the routine, to walk
away from the computer, to put whatever it is that you are doing and
allow yourself to BE present with your partner, spouse and/or friend.

i offer the suggestion of communication. Communicate with your loved
one how you would like to show your affection and Gratitude for their
presence in your life. Would they be open to receiving and giving in
this moment? Sometimes, it's like (to paraphraze Coach ilg) "you got to fake it, until you make it...
just show up and allow the experience to present itself. Eventually, you no longer need to fake it!"

During this Holy-Season, perhaps we can begin or begin again to Practice and create one or more of these initimate m(OM)ements.

As i quoted the Beloved Rumi above:
"Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground."

If you have any Relationship Yoga rituals that you would like to share
for the benefit of our Sangha or any constructive feedback on this subject
please honor us with your in-sights.

In Shakti Love...

Another Podium to a WF Father Warrior!

Congratulations to Most Noble and Cherished WF Online Student Mark Featherman who earned a Silver Medal in the PA State CycleCross Championships. About his podium, the Father Warrior said, "Once again, one of my kids was there to watch. He was so excited I had to tell him to stop telling the other riders how great his dad did." Mark follows Coach's guidelines carefully including a reliance on WF Early Morning Rituals, SUNRIDER Herbs, and BioBuilde Amino Acids. As Coach says, "Hey, the Path works, if YOU work the Path!"

Coach is now busy preparing his Noble Student for the United States National CycleCross Race in two weeks.

"To take for permanent that which is only transitory is the delusion of a madman."
- Kalu Rinpoche

Imprudent About Impermanence
by coach ilg

When i first began trying to understand my Tibetan Teachers when They launched into several hour long DharmaTeachings about Impermanence (a topic very dear to nearly all great Teachers who attempt to Teach from Metta or Lovingkindness), i fell off the back faster than i did when i made my upgrade from a Cat 3 road cyclist and found myself in pro peletons...gone baby...off the back in sixty seconds after a pro level surge or attack.

I see now, however, why my Beloved Teachers, such as Kalu Rinpoche quoted above, had to focus our studies on Impermanence. Most of us are scared stiff about dying. Those who even are so arrogant to place those "NO FEAR" bumper stickers on their pick up trucks, are probably, really...deep down scared about their ability to enter the Bardo (dying) Realms.

We are scared of death because, essentially, we mistake the impermanent (body, ahamkara (ego) manas (lower mind)for the permanent (Brahman or absolute reality). Now, those of you that are flat out Kshatriya (Warrior Class) are gonna have a rough ride over the next few paragraphs. I want you to stick close to my wheel, however. Certain things will hit your cells in the reading of the next few paragraphs which will take Seed in your Practice. For those of you who are my Brahmanic/Kshatriya's...well, you guys (and gals) will be all over this shit.

Ready? Okay, buckle up...yesterday i embraced you to buy my new Sport Snowshoeing DVD (it's BEAUTIFUL!), today, your ol' mountain yogi is taking you for a joyride into the cosmic blender of East meets West in the science of Energetics Toward Enlightenment! Don't you just gotta LOVE Wholistic Fitness? Nobody Dances Like Us, eh?

off we go! careful here! coach is stepping on the throttle, baby...you gonna be able to hang!??!

East or West? Whatever; USE the Force!

STUDENT:
Most Noble Coach of All Coaches,
I bow to your amazing LifeWork and unfathomable devotion to teaching the chi in both Eastern and Western dimensions. I have never come across such powerful Truths in any other author, let alone athlete or yoga teacher.

If you could answer a question; I am still confused about how the chi or the pranic forces of which you speak relate to the Western notion of physiology.

Your humble student,
LK

Most Noble Friend Along The Path,
Oh geez. we could just take a peek at any of the biochemical reactions occurring within any given instant of our being to draw out much rasas from your question. For example, we all know about molecules, right? Well, what the hell holds together a molecule? Ha! Well, there are several forces - that is right; FORCES) at work to create the much desired molecular structure that the Western Mind attempt to use to stop the Dance of Shiva and do what the Western Mind LOVES to do: organize, label, and analyze! Oooooh What Fun! The Eastern Mind is much more engaged in accepting the notion of forces and USING them within the ever changing forces of the universe, affectionately known as Lila!

Let me give you an example. Hmmmm. How about a Western description of one of the intermolecular Forces. How about if i isolate one of the better known Western isolations, say, the not so catchy named;
Van der Waals' forces.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
In chemistry, the term van der Waals' forces (sometimes called London dispersion forces) refers to a particular class of intermolecular forces. The term originally referred to all such forces, and this usage is still sometimes observed, but it is now more commonly used to refer to those forces which arise from the polarization of molecules into dipoles. This includes forces that arise from fixed or angle-averaged dipoles (Keesom forces) and free or rotation dipoles (Debye forces) as well as shifts in electron cloud distribution (London forces). The name refers to the Dutch physicist and chemist Johannes Diderik van der Waals, who first documented these types of forces. The Lennard-Jones potential is often used as an approximate model for the Van der Waals force as a function of distance.

Got that?
Okay good. What?
Oh, and you wonder WHY i gave up Molecular Cellular Developmental Biology to focus on being a sponsored rock and ice climber for ten years?
I tell ya,
the Western approach to Lila will make YOU want to "climb the walls" as well!

Awlrighty, lemme try to coach this to you in an Eastern way. I will choose the Yogic perspective, since Yoga is better known in our Tribe than the Asiatic spiritual sciences:

The molecule...doing what it does; Dance!

In yoga, the term vayu refers to a particular class of internal forces or etheric currents. The term refers to ten such forces, yet only five are considered major and in practical usage by most yogic adepts. More commonly, the adept focuses upon two vayu forces - prana-vayu and apana-vayu -which arise from the polarization of Shakti into Shiva energetics. This includes forces that arise from fixed, angle-averaged , or circular etheric currents as well as shifts in nadic distribution. The names refer to the symbolic representation of macrocosmic currents of undifferentiated universal particulate matter known as the gunas Though this sacred knowledge is pre-historic, it is generally accepted as being what i call, Divinely downloaded by Lord Shiva to his consort, Parvarti then his disciple Matsyendranath and his disciple Gorakshanath. It was eventually Swatmarama who expounded this ancient science and then codified into a handbook of enlightenment known as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika that documents these types of forces. A very small portion of this science known as asana or physical postures, is often used as an approximate model for attempting to discover these forces as a function of long term health and a foundation toward personal enlightenment

Better?
i figgered so.

In Chapter 4 of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika:
"Salutations to Siva the guru, who is of the form of nada, bindu, and kala."

that's it, right there.

let me break it down for you Foxy;
Siva is the static force of the UniVerse.
Nada is the sound or wave energy as in quantum physics.
Bindu is the center or the nucleus.
Kala is the wavicle that endlessly forms and reforms in a spaceless, timeless, and non-dual state.
Nada and Bindu are the dance of Shiva and Shakti, with Bindu being the nucleus in an atom while the whirling about of electrons around Bindu is Nada. The energy of this molecular dance is Kala.

As the Western sciences continue to grock and grope and grumble their Way toward an obviously interconnected Wholistic Fitness of the manifested and unmanifested universe(s), i choose to play with you, My Friend Along The Path of Awakening within our cherished humble, powerful Temple Beneath The Sacred Peak.

Nice riding with you today...

May your Practice and Particles remain manifested in the Brightest of inSights gained through your Daily Sweat and Stillness...

your coach

Coach's NOVEMBER PRACTICE STATS and DIARY SYNOPSIS!

Namaste Noble Ones!
okay, i know i promised to finish Part II of HONORING CARDIO AS YOGA, and my intent is still to do so. however, the "dog" must have eaten my rough draft cuz i can't find it anywhere. since i basically "channel" these DLs (some of which can take me several hours to write) i will have to Practice some more and empty myself and wait for the next Divine Download to finish that potent essay. hang in there with me...it ain't like i am some damn Fiction paperback author with a staff to help me crank these DLs out...it's just me, your ol' coach! So thanks for your Patience.

I must be in a HolyDay mood, cuz for today i'm gonna let you view my Monthly Practice Stats with Synopsis. These are edited, of course, for your safety. As always, DO NOT ATTEMPT to mimic my Training Volumes and Sport Performances on my extremely low caloric intake. You will injure yourself and damage your subtle anatomy. Much better to sign up for WF Online Training and let us Guide you naturally toward such powers. You CAN do what i do, i promise! However, keep in mind that i follow my Teacher's instructions carefully and i have been Practicing Wholistic Fitness for over 25 years along with eating the SUNRIDER Royal Herbs for 22 years! Also, i am taking BioBuilde (TM) Amino Acids (use my link on my website to get my complimentary Guidance!)as i have made public. As evidenced by my summer of racing, these Aminos are regenerating me from my workouts and recovering from high intensity sessions. keeping the body in a positive nitrogen balance is Job #1 for the wise athlete. What i am saying is: There are no shortcuts. Just Begin where you are. I make my Training Diaries public to serve as inspiration, not as an astral coaching directive to go and attempt to match my volumes.

Oh, i forgot to mention below that i did sent a new "Zen Dart" personal record last month. Get this: 1 minute and 04 seconds! that's all the way around the DartBoard (#1-20) plus 2 bulls-eyes! i'm certain with all the talented Warriors in this Tribe however, you will probably beat that mark. GO FOR IT! i found yet another new throwing technique which i call my "Perch and Push" Technique. the new mark felt quite easily and my average game time is now around 1:40! i know i can break the 1 minute barrier soon! Hey, some people watch TV to take a break from office work...this yogi uses Zen Darts to empty my mind, get clear, and enhance Dharana. Warriors are allWays "on" their Practice in some way, shape, or form.
May your own Practice be strong and sincere and i am LOVING all the great dharma going on in the WF SanghaLounge! there is mounting winter training talk in the Lounge right now and deals for you Sport Snowshoers out there! soooo Blessed we are to have this humble, Noble Path of the Ancients re-tooled for our modern era...

om so ti,
coach ilg

COACH ILG's PRACTICE STATS: NOVEMBER, 2006

The beginner’s mind is an open mind, an empty mind, a ready mind, and if we really listen with a beginner’s mind, we might really begin to hear. For if we listen with a silent mind, as free as possible from the clamor of preconceived ideas, a possibility will be created for the truth of the teachings to pierce us, and for the meaning of life and death to become increasingly and startlingly clear.
My master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche said: “The more and more you listen, the more and more you hear; the more and more you hear, the deeper and deeper your understanding becomes.”
- Sogyal Rinpoche

NOVEMBER PRACTICE STATS:

Strength Training Hours =2.50 (i did 6 ST workouts averaging about a half hour each )
down by 30 minutes from Oct.
down by half hour from November, yet the highly concentrated, high intensity sessions included more plyometric training specific to nordic skiing as i prep for Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon. my ST sessions these days are more inwardly concentrated upon the yogic bandhas and nadic line than some of my asana sessions! take THAT Yoga Journal!!!

Cardio Training Hours = 38.75 (average of 1 1/2 hours per day)
down from 39.25 in Oct.
i was able to Katoola the Sacred Peak several times and actually did two Ski Descents on my mini skis; utterly fantastic fun!!!also, a huge MTB skill breakthrough for me on the 19th under the tutelage of Sensei; i am mastering rolling over fallen trees and big boulder drop-offs and bullet passes like never before! it's all YOGA, baby! finishing up getting footage for my new Snowshoe DVD on Sacred Peak; it's gonna be GREAT! stoked! in New Mexico, i rode a club ride with my old bros and shattered the group with one only kid heading for the mid-sprint prime; i did not know where the line was, yet still got 4th! i had not been on my road bike all month! so many cyclists in the peleton suffer from so many postural and physiologic dis-ease which could be sooooo easily mitigated by WF! they still seem scared literally stiff of yoga; why?!?! oh well, guess i will just keep kicking their asses on a third or less of their on-bike training volumes! geez....whatever!

Yoga (asana) Hours: 52.25 hours (average of nearly two hours daily)
down from 58.25 in Oct.
Toilet Yoga remains the steadfast ally for the ongoing development of my spine healing and internal energetics. during asana sessions, pratyhara comes fast and deep as i embark on drilling nadic fitness throughout muladhara/svadhisthana granthis and continue to break down and open into my "Jesus Granthis"; yoga is AMAZING!!!!!!! backbends really paying off now in my Cardio; on the Sacred Peak, my mountaineering efforts are carrying huge average speeds with seemingly little perceived effort; it's like i feel like i am at Z2 or low Z3 and yet, my speed is near record pace w/o trying. much Laghava and my Pranic Fields seem to jump in amplification above 10,000'. Mantra seeps into every cell...all of this is just tip of the ilg iceberg; so hard to put into words...i feel so ready to renounce, yet so much Outer World suffering! must continue to do my best to Teach for a while longer yet...

Meditation Hours: 50.50 hours (average of nearly two hours daily)
up from 46.25 in Oct.!!!
{INSIGHTS FROM WITHIN MY PRACTICE OF THIS DISCIPLINE NOT AVAILABLE FOR PUBLIC VIEWING...it would be misleading and confusing to you and thus not safe. i must honor my Teacher's commands and not make public that which is reserved for Teacher/Student training. I will say this much; Pranayama!}

Nutrition; average of 1556 kcals/day!!! PR of the year!
down from 1692 kcals/day in Oct.!!!
Ahara jaya (mastery of food; a Yogic mandatory requirement) was singingly easy this month. SUNRIDER Herbs an absolute GodSend and my ongoing experiment and embrace of BioBuilde Amino Acids obviously continue to keep me in a positive nitrogen balance. when A and i went to LA and then to New Mexico; i experienced HUGE SURGES in overall energy. for me, the reliance upon muscle/oxygen/calories for energy nows seems as archaic a system as the Conestoga Wagons! As the herbs continue to intensify my pranic fields, my capacity to manage the vayus continues to develop and enchant me ever deeper within (Pratyhara!!!). All muscle strength and nadic flows continue to progress in my weak/imbalanced/injured regions. my physical pain is my "red stripe" for Dharana and is now easily targeting and often erased by strength of mind followed by the Pranic Power which overrides all tensions and pain; scintillating stuff!!! why are MORE PEOPLE engaged with INNER ATTAINMENT instead of their addiction to ENTERTAINMENT!?!?!??!
